About the Association
Established in 1929, we are
currently one of the largest residents' associations in the country with
over 8,500 members.
Our aim is to
actively promote the maintenance and improvement of the amenities of West
Wickham. Our activities cover every aspect of local life, such as planning,
street cleaning, social services, crime and accident prevention, public
transport and the roads, the environment and anything else that concerns
residents.
We act as a pressure group and make representations to the Council,
Government, transport operators and many other bodies involved in providing
services for our town. Over the years the Association has been recognised as
an influential and responsible body representing residents' interest. We are
non-political and work closely with our ward councillors, Member of
Parliament and Greater London Assembly representative.
We also organise a small number of social events every year, so that
residents have an opportunity to get to know each other! We are also very
actively involved in the annual Christmas Shopping Evening organised with
the help of local businesses.
We have a Committee of 20 volunteers whose appointment is ratified at
our Annual General Meeting. The Committee meets every month and decides on
specific actions to deal with residents' concerns and promote their common
interests. Much of the detailed work is done by a number of specialist
sub-committees (planning, transport, crime prevention etc.) which
investigate the issues and make recommendations for action to the Committee.
We keep in touch with our membership primarily through the 100 Road
Stewards, who distribute our Newsletter four times a year and collect the
annual subscription which is currently £1.
Members are encouraged to contact their Road Stewards, or members of
the Committee, with their views, concerns and suggestions. |
